Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition

Promoting the Bicycle for Everyday Use

Vision

The Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition (originally Santa Clara Valley Bicycle Association) is a 501(c)3 organization that has provided a forum for bicyclists to organize, discuss common concerns, and take action since the early 1970s.

SVBC is committed to raising cycling consciousness in local governments, underscoring such issues as:

  • The importance of wide outside lanes
  • Signal detector loops that respond to bicycles
  • Secure bike parking at events, entertainment venues, train stations and airports
  • Accommodating bikes on transit vehicles
  • Appropriate road striping to encourage peaceful coexistence of cyclists and motorists

Our members serve on bicycle advisory committees, gather data, monitor trends and disseminate information on urban cycling issues to local governments, cyclists and the public. Our bimonthly newsletter, The Spinning Crank, informs readers about current issues affecting Silicon Valley cyclists. We organize at a grassroots level to create an environment in which bicycling can flourish.

The SVBC focuses on issues in Santa Clara County. The Peninsula Bicycle and Pedestrian Coalition (PBPC) is the Peninsula Chapter of the SVBC which represents San Mateo County.

Goals

  • Adequate accommodation of bikes on CalTrain and other public transportation.
  • More complete bicycle parking facilities at transit stations and other locations.
  • Showers, lockers and bicycle parking at places of employment.
  • Secure bike parking at multi-family residences.
  • Cyclist input into local road projects.
  • Persuading recreational cyclists to use their bikes for transportation.
  • Expanding and maintaining bicycle friendly streets, expressways, bridges, greenways and bikeways.
  • Reducing traffic collisions and traffic related stress by educating cyclists, pedestrians and motorists to share street space.
  • Shifting government policy toward alternative transportation, and away from “autos first”.

How We Get There

SVBC is a rapidly growing organization that is focused on making a big impact in Santa Clara County.

  • Cyclist Education Programs that teach cyclists the skills they need to safely and confidently navigate their neighborhoods and County by bicycle
  • Bringing cycling clubs and organizations together into a unified voice for improved bicycle facilities and infrastructure
  • Providing valet bicycle parking at events including all Stanford home football games and numerous city festivals and bicycle events
  • Serving as a clearinghouse for bicycle advocates and our members through our support of the local Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committees (BPACs), publication of the Spinning Crank, and maintenance of our website.
  • Coordinating Volunteer Campaigns such as our Guadalupe River Corridor campaign.
  • Reaching out to new cyclists through our annual Bike to Work Month Festivities
  • Growing our membership. The more members and volunteers we have, the greater our collective influence in our County.
